The first edition of the National Drug Dosage Calculation Competition for Nurses (NDDCCN) has come and gone but the indelible marks left remains evergreen.

NDDCCN is an initiative of the Global Impact Health Initiative (GiHi). The initiative seeks to provide specific solutions to identified problems or challenges in patient care and safety.

This competition is aimed at helping nurses to improve their knowledge and skills on drug dosage calculation. Knowing the peculiar role of nurses in drug administration, the competition is a wake up call to the nursing community in Nigeria to do everything possible to develop interest in nursing calculations thus improving the quality of care given to patients.

A total of 230 nurses (staff and students) registered for the competition. All six geopolitical zones were well represented.
170 of the registered participants sat for the First stage of the examination- online computer-based test (CBT). The cut off mark was 70%, and only 38 participants passed, hence qualifying for the second stage. A clear observation was made in the sharp drop of the participants from 170 to 38, which further validates the need for nurses to acquire relevant knowlege and get motivated to improve their skills on drug dosage calculation.

In the second stage of the examination, 5 out of the 38 participants qualified for the grand finale. The five candidates are: Oladimeji Victor, Akinola Lurogho, Gbodi Damilola, Owoade Oluwasegun and Kayode Abolarin.
Three winners emerged after the grand finale. Oladimeji Victor, a nursing student from the School of Nursing, University College Hospital, came FIRST. Akinola Lurogho, a nurse intern and a graduate of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, came SECOND. Gbodi Damilola, a nursing student from the department of nursing, Osun State University, came THIRD.

The first prize was awarded a gift of #40,000 plus a textbook on drug dosage calculation.
The second prize was awarded a gift of #20,000 plus a textbook on drug dosage calculation.
The third prize was awarded a gift of #10,000 plus a textbook on drug dosage calculation.
