Mount Kenya University (MKU) has been reaccredited by the Nursing Council of Kenya (NCK) to continue offering its Bachelor of Science in Nursing program. The reaccreditation process occurs every five years to ensure institutions meet the required training standards, including well-equipped laboratories and affiliated hospitals.
The Registrar of NCK, Dr. Lister Onsongo, officially handed over the reaccreditation certificate to MKU Vice Chancellor, Prof. Deogratious Jaganyi. The university was first accredited in 2012, with its first reaccreditation conducted in 2017. Over the past 12 years, MKU has trained more than 1,400 qualified nurses.
Global Opportunities for MKU Nursing Graduates
MKU has also established international partnerships to create employment opportunities for its graduates. More than 80 MKU-trained nurses have secured jobs in Germany and Austria, thanks to collaborations with institutions such as Hochschule Koblenz University of Applied Sciences in Germany and Lebenshilfe Tirol in Austria.
Kenyan Nurses Eligible to Work Worldwide
Dr. Onsongo emphasized that Kenyan nurses trained under accredited programs can practice globally since nursing training in Kenya aligns with International Council of Nurses standards. She also acknowledged the rising demand for nurses both locally and internationally, driven by population growth and healthcare needs.
Additionally, the Nursing Council is reviewing MKU’s request to increase its nursing student intake to address the growing demand for nursing professionals. The university’s ultra-modern skills laboratories, equipped with advanced training technology, were also recognized as being of international standards.
This reaccreditation highlights MKU’s commitment to delivering high-quality nursing education and ensuring its graduates remain competitive in the global healthcare sector.
