Hospital Dismisses Allegations of Denying Pregnant Woman Emergency Care
Lagos, Nigeria – The management of As Salam Convalescent Centre, Ibeju Lekki, has officially responded to allegations circulating on social media regarding the tragic death of a pregnant woman, Kemi Akinbobola. Contrary to claims that the facility refused treatment due to a ₦500,000 deposit, the hospital’s Medical Director has clarified the sequence of events surrounding the incident.

A correspondent from Fellow Nurses Africa (FNA) spoke directly with the Medical Director of As Salam Convalescent Centre, who categorically denied the allegations. He explained that the woman arrived at the facility in critical condition, having reportedly suffered multiple convulsions at home before arrival.
“Upon examination, it was evident that the patient required urgent blood transfusion and surgical intervention. Given the severity of her condition, we immediately advised the husband to take her to Epe General Hospital, a better-equipped facility for such emergencies. At no point did we request any form of payment, as our primary concern was ensuring she received the necessary specialized care,” the Medical Director stated.
He further emphasized that the woman was not a registered patient at As Salam Convalescent Centre and had never sought medical attention at the facility before that day. The hospital clarified that the decision to refer her to Epe General Hospital was based solely on medical necessity and the need for more advanced intervention.
“We did not even transfer her from the wheelchair she was brought in with. The referral was made purely in her best interest, as time was of the essence,” he added.
The management of As Salam Convalescent Centre expressed regret over the misrepresentation of facts on social media and urged the public to seek verified information before drawing conclusions.
“We became aware of a misleading post on TikTok made by the deceased’s husband, suggesting that our facility had rejected his wife. This is entirely false, and we are keen on setting the record straight. Our commitment remains to provide ethical and compassionate healthcare services to all who come through our doors,” the Medical Director concluded.
Fellow Nurses Africa will continue to monitor developments on this case and urges healthcare facilities and the public to uphold factual accuracy in matters of public health.
